That
discount certificate or coupon offered by roofers to help you meet your
deductible may make you guilty of insurance fraud. When you
purchase an insurance policy, you and the insurance company agree that
in case of a disaster (hail usually), you and the company will share
the replacement cost. You will pay the amount that you choose as
your deductible, the insurance company will pay the rest of the cost.
Very simple....
Some roofers attempt to attract business by
'helping' the home owner meet their deductible by offering coupons or
special discounts that can be used toward payment of the bill. For the
roofer, this is perfectly legal. For you, the home owner it is
legal also, provided you include this discount certificate along with
your claim to your insurance company. In your contract with the
company, you agree to pay your deductible portion, and they will pay
the remainder of the cost.
The Coupon reduces the total
'replacement cost' of your roof, not your deductible. So, if you
do not disclose this adjustment in the replacement cost to your
insurance company, you are in violation of your contract and the law in
a very serious way.
